Packaging Act "Green Dot"

Fee for Service Packaging (SVP)

On January 1, 2019, the new Packaging Act (VerpackG) came into force, replacing the previously valid 5th amendment to the Packaging Ordinance. As before, under the Packaging Ordinance (VerpackV) valid until 2018, the initial distributor of service packaging (SVP) is obligated to commission a dual system, against appropriate payment (system participation), to take back and recycle the packaging and – corresponding to the quantity – to submit a declaration of completeness for the packaging placed on the market in the calendar year.

According to §3 of the Packaging Act, service packaging is understood to be: "Packaging used by retailers, restaurateurs and other service providers to enable or support the transfer of goods to the final consumer."
Thus, under the Packaging Ordinance, the initial distributor is the party who, within the scope of the ordinance, first passes on packaged goods to third parties. For example, bakers, butchers, or fast-food establishments are considered initial distributors.

What is the purpose of the Packaging Act?

The goals: More packaging recycling in Germany and fair competition!

To improve packaging recycling in Germany and further develop the circular economy, the Packaging Act places an even stronger focus on recycling. The primary objective of the VerpackG is therefore the gradual increase of recycling rates for different material types. Starting this year, for example, 90% of glass and paper waste is to be recycled, and the recycling rate for plastic waste, among other things, will be raised to 63%.

Who does the law apply to?

This law is particularly unavoidable for our B2B customers - meaning for you! Since the packaging you can purchase from us is considered "system-participating" and you are defined as "manufacturers" according to the VerpackG, you must also pay the licensing fees to the Dual System. The underlying fee system is mandatory for you, and non-compliance can lead to a sales ban and high fines. So that this does not happen under any circumstances, we would like to help you!

How do I proceed?

Normally, this is done in three steps:

1. Registration requirement with the ZSVR
2. System participation with a dual system
3. Data reporting to LUCID

BUT DON'T PANIC - we have decided to make it easy for you and take over this process for you! After you place your order with us, the licensing fees will already be automatically included in the price. If you order from us, you don't have to worry about anything anymore!
