Wisefood launches sustainable straws with ALDI

We are very pleased to be able to officially announce: Wisefood goes ALDI - as a promotional item until New Year's Eve. ALDI supported our company Wisefood together with the accelerator program TechFounders for 20 weeks. During this time we were able to significantly develop our sustainable and edible drinking straw and the company concept. At the end of the year, our SUPERHALM will be on the shelves of every ALDI Nord and ALDI SÜD store as a promotional item. In this blog article you will find out how we worked together over the past few weeks and finally made it onto the shelf. But how did the cooperation with ALDI come about? The cooperation with ALDI began with the application and participation in the accelerator program Techfounders. TechFounders is a 20-week international accelerator program based in Munich. The accelerator brings startups together with corporate partners such as ALDI. The aim is to help startups not only financially, but also through coaching and workshops to further develop their business model and product.

  • By chance, we found out through our network that ALDI will be a corporate partner at Techfounders this year. After the intensive application round, we were happy to be selected as one of three startups for the program in July 2019. How should one imagine working with ALDI as a startup In the beginning we talked a lot about our current challenges in all areas and shared ideas about where we could currently use support. We were assigned a mentor who we could pester with our questions and topics at any time. In the further course, we jointly set goals for the project and exchanged information regularly (on a weekly basis).
    How did ALDI support us? ALDI not only supported us financially, but also gave us intensive advice on a wide variety of topics such as sustainability of the packaging (a hotly debated topic for us too). Together we went through all possible aspects of the packaging - for example, we found that light font colors are more sustainable than dark ones. Thanks to the support of ALDI, we have now been able to invest in a paper packaging machine. Unfortunately, it takes some time before a new system is installed in production. But now it is only a matter of time before our drinking straws are also available in paper packaging. ALDI also provided us with logistics partners and manufacturers of display stands. Aldi's strong support was a great help in making the campaign a success.
    Apart from the action, what do we take away from the project? In addition to an incredible amount of knowledge about the topic of food retailing, we were able to find many great partners and coaches through the project. The input on the topics of product, design and packaging was also extremely valuable for us. For example, we will further develop our design next year. The most important thing about the campaign SUPERHALM from Wisefood will be available in over 4,200 ALDI NORD and SOUTH branches across Germany When: From December 20th for almost 2 weeks What: Black and brown SUPER STRAWS.Each pack contains 30 straws How to: We recommend using the SUPERHALM normally as a drinking straw, i.e. drinking first, then eating - after all, we are primarily working on a drinking straw alternative and not on snacks. SUPERHALM tastes best when left to soak in the cocktail of your choice for 15-20 minutes. What's next? 2019 was an incredible year for us with many ups and downs. We are far from having reached our destination. Throughout our company's history, we have shown how we continuously develop our products. We're not finished yet. We want to develop more and more sustainable products and in the new year we want to replace many other disposable tableware products with edible alternatives. With your help, we have already been able to exchange over 50 million plastic straws. We look forward to replacing many more plastic items with you and thus making our contribution to a more sustainable world..
